Doljabi for a baby’s Korean first birthday is one of the most anticipated parts when celebrating a dol. Doljabi  is a tradition where the baby is placed in front of various items or objects. Then, the baby is encouraged to grab one or two items from the set of objects where each choice symbolizes a certain future of the baby with respect to his or her career or a lifestyle.

Traditionally, staple items like yarn (represents long life) or money (which represents wealth) would be placed in front of the baby. In modern days, parents have become creative and will place objects that are fitting to their liking, taste or wantings. Such creative objects can be a microphone for a singer/celebrity or play knife and cutting board for a chef.

Doljabi is only one part of this traditional celebration. There’s more to it!  Check out our blog post about Korean First Birthday Tradition.
